About CORD Sri Lanka
Happy CORD kids
CORD Sri Lanka is the service wing of Chinmaya Mission Sri Lanka and was established in 2005 in the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster on December 2004. It is a non-government, non-profit organization and registered as a charity in Srilanka and is part of a larger network of CORD projects worldwide. CORD Sri Lanka expanded its activities to include long term relief efforts in the North East as well, working at grass root levels towards the development and empowerment of women and children.

CORD Sri Lanka is once again re- focusing its relief efforts, with the changing conditions of the North and the East. CORD is currently assisting IDP children who have been released from the camps and are back to school in Jaffna. We are also identifying IDP families to provide them with long term help in settling back into their former lives. With the generous support of donors across the globe we were able to help the IDP's in the interim camps; now we are looking for your continued support to help with long term relief. In addition our Microfinance initiative and youth education programmes in the North and East continue to improve the lives of women and children.

Please help us help those in Need!!

The sponsorship will ensure that a child's basic educational supplies, uniforms and other requirements will be taken care of. CORD will also extend it to provide nutritional counselling, basic health screening, school admissions, value based education and family counselling. Mothers will be encouraged to get involved in the women groups and microfinance programme to improve their quality of lives. CORD Sri Lanka volunteers visit Jaffna in January 2010

On New Year's Eve, CORD Srilanka volunteers visited Jaffna to provide educational materials  to IDP children and to
initiate women's groups (Mahalir Mandram) for microfinance programs.

They approached the prinicipals of two schools, Kokuvil Sri Ramakrishna Vidyasali and Kondavil Hindu Maha Vidyalayam, to identify displaced children in desperate need of assistance.

At Kokuvil Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalayam we provided locally bought uniform cloth materials and shoes to 24 boys and 29 girls in Grades 1 to 11. A girl's pack contained white Uniform material, inner garments and white Bata Shoe and socks. A boy's a pack contained white shirt material, blue trouser material and black Bata shoe with socks.

At Kondavil Hindu Maha Vidyalayam the Principal, Mr. S. Shanmugakumar handed over the list of displaced students (43 boys and 58 girls) in Grades 1 to 13 who were in need of uniforms and shoes. As the number was large we opted to buy shoes as a priority and presented it to the students at a function organized at the school.

The total cost of the supplies were approximately $1500.

Women's Microfinance Project Continues to Grow

Chamber of Commerce continues to support CORD's Microfinance programmes
Recognizing the success of CORD's microfinance programmes, the Chamber of Commerce once again selected 24 women  from our Women's Groups of Batticaloa to gift Electric Ovens, Industrial Machines, Sewing machines and Oil Expeller Machines. The selected women were affected by the Tsunami and have been earning an average income of Rs 6,000-10,000/month through microfinance programmes.  CORD's successful micro finance programme has benefitted over 150 women in Batticaloa who are now engaged in small scale entreprenuership earning an average income of Rs. 10,000/- per month.

Introducing new Skills
CORD Sri Lanka sponsored a skilled craft and textile trainer from India, Mrs Selvi Dharmendra, to conduct training programes for Women Groups in Batticaloa and Ramboda in November. She has trained more than 100 women in variety of textile handiwork including embroidery, mirror work, & zardhosi work; jewellery making such as making of necklaces, bracelets and earrings using beads. She also trained them in the making of pappads and pickles. The training programmes we selected are not a skill set common among Sri Lankans and we generally import such products. With the right guidance and encouragement some of these skills can provide these women with a livelihood. The women of the Mahalir Mandram who received these training were very appreciative and motivated by the potential for a bright future.

We would like  to expand our programmes to the families in Jaffna.

Teacher Training

CORD Srilanka continues its English Language Teacher  Trainning  program in Batticaloa and Colombo. The teachers benefit immensely from the unique approach of our  trainer, Olga Schafheutle, who trains batches of 25 teachers for one year.  Olga has extensive experience in english language teaching in Germany and Belgium. In addition, she was the principal of a high school in Germany for 10 years. After her retirement she taught at various institutions in Sri Lanka before joining CORD SriLanka. This program was initiated after we noticed how the youth at schools are not benefitting properly from the English Language classes.  The teachers who have completed the course are better equipped to train the youth.
