Dr. Meera Krishna and her team has been
working hard in this area last quarter.
487 patients were examined and treated in the
various centers and received allopathic or Siddha
treatment in October 2009. 20 patients underwent
blood tests and other special investigations. Six
patients were detected to be anemic. Two had
hypercholesterolemia and one patient who had a
breast lump underwent fine needle aspiration to rule
out breast cancer. More than 30 children and adults
have had Hepatitis B vaccination in September.
A total of 412 patients were examined and treated in
December 2009. Early cervical cancer and several
cases of anemia were detected. Several villagers
underwent free lipid profile testing under the
Saffola-Life scheme. 12 out of the 30 had
hypercholesterolemia and received life-style
modification advice and cholesterol lowering agents.

Self Help Group (SHG) News
On 2nd October, two of CORD
Siruvani SHGs (Chinmaya Jyoti and Chinmaya Durga)
received bank loans of 60,000 each during a district
level function held in Thondamuthur, in which all
the major banks participated. The function was
presided over by Hon’ble Home Minister Sri P
Chidambaram and many other dignitaries. In another
function held in Pollachi on 27th October, two of
CORD Siruvani SHGs (Chinmaya Durga and Chinmaya
Surya) received subsidy for the loans. This function
was presided over by Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister
of Tamilnadu. This was good avenue for creating
awareness regarding CORD Siruvani
SHGs. Over the last one and a half months 17 new
SHGs have been formed and they have opened accounts
in the nearby banks.
On 6th October, Dr Meera Krishna, the CORD Siruvani
coordinator and a few SHG members visited Gandhigram
Trust in Dindigul. Dr. Krishna was invited to speak
on Microenterprises for the SHGs. Women of more than
a 1000 SHGs participated in the programs and spoke
of various new income generating ventures like making mattresses,
carpentry etc.
CORD Siruvani's new SHGs have been given training in
CORD Siruvani office by CORD Siruvani CDWs on
maintaining the SHG accounts and other areas where
women should focus. Pain balm, newspaper packets,
agarbathies and phenyl made by CORD Siruvani SHGs
are finding a wider market now.
CORD Siruvani SHGs now
number 42, out of which 4 are male SHGs and the rest are
female. On the 10th of December, 40 women from the
SHGs yet to be credit-linked underwent the one-day
orientation program sponsored by NABARD. The women
also put a stall in the 2-day CANBAZAAR organized by
Canara Bank where their products like Sambar powder,
agarbathies, ladoos, pickles, phenyl, pain balm,
areca plates and palm-leaf baskets were sold.
From the 30th of November to the 7th of December 30
of CORD Siruvani SHG women underwent training in
sanitary napkin production. This was sponsored by
Canara Bank which is the lead bank. The women are
continuing to practice what they have learnt till
they get a loan and the quality of their product is
standardized and satisfactory customer feed-back is
obtained.
Dr Manimegalai, Professor and Head of the Department
of Womens’ studies in Bharatidasan University,
Trichy visited CORD Siruvani office and spoke to the
women making sanitary napkins.
Ten of CORD Siruvani SHGs in Kalikanayakanpalayam met
on 20th December. Mrs Karpagam who runs an
organization called OLI visited the people gathered
and spoke to them about the importance of trees. She
sponsored tree guards and trees. She spoke about the
dangers of global warming and asked everyone to be
eco-friendly.

Training and Outreach News
Computer classes for the villagers have been
started in CORD Siruvani office in October. A place
has been rented, near the CORD office in
Thennamanallur. Here children and adults are
undergoing training in basic computer skills every
evening (in batches). A computer teacher is looking
after the program.
A mass environmental cleaning program was conducted by the NSS
students of Govt. Arts College. The children cleaned
the environs of Puthur village. Dr Meera Krishna was invited to be
the chief guest for the valedictory function of the
NSS camp in Dhaliyur.
Around 70 of CORD Siruvani Balavihar children
participated in the Balavihar camp in Chinmaya
Vadavalli school on Christmas Day. The children
participated in the skits, drawing, quiz and games
competitions and won several prizes. They met the
other Balavihar children of Coimbatore. The CORD
Balavihar sevaks met the other Balavihar sevaks and
shared a lot of information.
CORD Siruvani SHGs put up a stall in the CODISSIA
complex, to sell their products. The stall was
sponsored by the Coimbatore IOB. The SHG products
were also sold in Anand Utsav in CIRS by the
students. Awareness was created about CORD
activities by the CIRS children.
